I have been thinking about this issue for quite long but this empty time during a train journey gives me the opportunity. Although the view outside is good from time to time as I get to see huge wind mills but otherwise it’s the same as my India but at a higher speed.
I wonder how powerful some local leaders in India have become that even the most influential of businessmen, sports persons and actors are nothing in front of them. When even these people do not seem to have a right to freedom of expression then what can we say about a billion other people of India.
Sachin tendulkar was targeted for giving his opinion on the issue of Marathi manoos and said that for him he is an Indian first and then a Maharashtrian. And that he thinks Maharashtra is for all India. He was brutally insulted in media by saying that he has no right to speak on these issues. They even said that even sachin has done nothing for the country and that is why he should not interfere in the issues dealing with the state or the country.
Very recently, Shahrukh and Aamir gave their opinion on the inclusion of Pakistani players in the IPL and even they were shut up very easily by these so called leaders. Not only they were not to speak but shahrukh had to suffer some consequences as the posters of his films were torn and it has been said that his films won’t be allowed in some districts of Maharashtra. And even Mukesh Ambani, who must have given large amounts to these political parties for their various expenses was asked to shut up.
I feel that no one has any worth in front of these political leaders and they have become so powerful that they have become like local dictators. And, there are hundreds of them, in every state, in every district or in every town or village. They just need to create an issue (they do not convert problems into issues albeit they create issues which in turn cause problems). You want to become a leader: just have contacts with some existing leader (so that police can not dare touch you), hire some people (multitudes available in India because of unemployment as this is easy money or the urge to choose politics as an employment or to become powerful in their small localities), create an issue, resort to some sort of vandalism, harm somebody or if the issue created is not related to somebody or some community, damage the public property and the rest is done by media. People like Raj Thackery become big leaders overnight.
State politics has become worse, at present they say that they are doing this for the welfare of their state residents and then the next generation of such leaders will come and they will start looking at the ‘welfare’ of their districts and so on. A wild imagination of some leader might lead to the demand of a separate country as well. Everybody wants new states to be created; they argue that smaller states will function well. But is this their motivation or wanting to become rulers of those states is their motivation. First they are fighting for smaller states and when they will see that they can have a bigger state for themselves they will start fighting for larger. Greed of the people will never stop but it must be controlled somehow else we might be moving towards the old times of kings fighting battles with each other and armies getting killed for nothing.
